Where is home?

I have been thinking a lot about where I want to live these past few years, where my real home is. While Switzerland is a pretty good to place to live in, and Zürich regularly makes it into the top ranks of the world's best cities to live in, I always felt it was not the place where I really belonged. In fact, I always liked my city, my country best from outside, from a certain distance, for a short visit. I've lived abroad for a year twice, and dreamed of working and living abroad for ages, and I've been thinking about it more often again recently. I think the big canvas (it's 60x120 cm) I'm working on at the moment reflects this search for that place I'm still looking for. I very rarely start a painting without having any idea at all about what I'm going to paint, but this is one of them. All I knew was that I wanted it to be green to match the bedroom. This is what was beginning to emerge in the first session.

In the second session, I still didn't have a clue about where I wanted to go with this, only that I wanted to tone down the bright colours a little bit.

It is not finished yet, and while I do have one or two ideas what I might try - or not, I'm still not sure at all what it will look like when it's finished. We'll see.

Have you found your true home? Do you live in the place where you belong? How did you find it and get there?

Linking up to the wonderfully inspiring Paint Party Friday, which is always a beautiful place to visit.

  1. Oh this is fab. In my mind the black circles immediately became magnifying glasses, which kind of suits what you are talking about. Anyway, it's amazing already. Can't wait to see where it goes.

  5. This is GORGEOUS!!! I really like it!
I've always lived within ten miles of my birth place, so it's always been home. Never really thought of moving. Very exciting though!! :0)

  7. I love, love, love your painting! Those 3 powerful elliptical forms over the soft buildings and blues in the background give it a lot of strength. May you have a guiding light in your search.

  8. I love the colors in this painting! Really beautiful. I came back to my home state many years ago but still long to go back to Colorado. Probably will never happen but a girl can dream.

  9. What a great post. It's funny how often our 'home' town is not necessarily our home. I haven't lived in my home town for many years although I still visited often to see my parents. I lived in many different places over the years and would often find my wanderlust returning after about two years in any one place - now though, I think I may have found my spiritual home up here in Scotland (although I'd still quite like a lottery win so I could have a warm spiritual home in Portugal where I lived for two years and where I would return to in a heartbeat.)

  10. oh, and I was so busy talking about spiritual homes that I forgot to mention how amazing your painting is! I love that you just started with no clear idea of what you wanted to illustrate. It looks amazing so far and I'll look forward to seeing how it progresses.

  11. I love your work. This is just fabulous!! I've moved quite a few times, though for the last 13 years I've been in one place. I love where I am now, but I still get that urge to move again, and experience a new place. Good luck on your journey, wherever it might take you!

  12. Love where you are going with this piece. Your heart will reach it's destination and you'll know when the piece is done. It's awesome so far. Speaking of hearts, Valerie said it well, "Home is where the heart is." Very true. Although my heart is here where I am at, I see myself in another country, like Spain. Happy PPF!

  13. Gorgeous painting, love how the big circles give it a feeling of a vast space, love the orange sun and the white lined city silhouette, love the dribbles and splatters ... Maybe it's London... it has a bit misty look. ;)

  18. What a beautiful intuitive painting. The lovely thing about painting like this is that you just let it take you where it wants to go. You may find in the end that there will be many more layers that tell this story about home and what it means to you. Its really beautiful.

  21. Beautiful painting. I know what you are experiencing, it took me a long time to find where I belong - where I started. But I think I had to go away for a long time (17yrs) to realise where I belong. Just follow your heart and it works out and have fun while doing it, because the experiences you have while away make you appreciate when you come back.

I am still in the process...but I love my painting!! Yours is stunning...but different than mine.... Can't wait to see how it goes!

  26. My first look said NYC in the US of A...but then no, it looked more old European style to me, but still big city. So I too wonder where this will take you. It's beautiful now! Looking forward to what it becomes.
I never strayed far from where I was born. Still in the same county. Even though I've travel the world over in all directions. I am content in my "small town" near the Big City of San Francisco.
